Levels of EV Charging Explained

Categorised as EV Charging
Levels 1, 2 and 3 EV Charging

Level 1 EV charging is by alternating current (AC) and is slow charging ranging from 1.4kW to 3.7W AC from a 10 Amp or 15 Amp normal power point.

Level 2 EV charging is by alternating current (AC) in a range from 7kW to 22kW. Level 2 requires a dedicated charging device, with its own cable or a socket. These can be in a home, business, in car parks or on the street etc. The cable and plugs and sockets used are a standard called a Type 2 socket or cable.

Level 3 EV charging is by DC current, rates from 25kW to 350kW and the cables and plugs are fitted to the charging station. CCS2 is the standard fitting in Australia although some older vehicles may use Chademo standard plugs, which are available at some public charging stations.
